Manager Health Safety Security and Environment

Our client, a major Saskatchewan-based mining company, has an opening for a, the Manager Health, Safety, Security and Environment who will be accountable for the development and implementation of operational programs, plans and procedures leading to the continual improvement and compliance of core processes. As a key member of the site management team, the Manager, HSSE will identify and develop initiatives that support a positive safety culture and proactive environmental approach for the operations team and work with the senior management team to act as an interface with internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Vice President, Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) The successful candidate will:

  • Provide HSSE guidance and technical support to the organization on health, safety, environment, emergency response and security issues
  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching and development to site based HSSE department staff
  • Plan and prioritize overall work activities for the department
  • Establish effective internal and external communications
  • Develop, implement and maintain proactive HSSE strategies, systems, programs & procedures
  • Ensure proactive compliance, reporting and effective working relationships with regulatory agencies
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies and professional groups that influence policy and legislation
  • Actively monitor pending legislation changes related to HSSE programs and procedures
  • Maintain knowledge of current HSE strategies, trends and technologies through industry working relationships, and by participating in exchange groups, associations and committees
  • Ensure risks are properly managed according to the company’s risk management processes & procedures
  • Ensure proper HSSE data management and reporting
  • Lead a culture of appreciation, recognition, teamwork, collaboration and open communication, in keeping with company values
  • Manage departmental budget and ensure financial responsibility and accountability
  • Act as a support to the emergency response team
  • Lead incident management by ensuring all incidents are reported, investigated, acted upon appropriately and managed in a timely manner, including preventative and corrective actions
  • Support projects and contractor mobilization and management
  • Manage the site security function including contractor performance

Qualifying requirements for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and work experience in relation to the role will be considered
  • 10 plus years of progressive experience in the field of Health, Safety and Environment
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience managing the security function is an asset
  • Experience in mining/resource industries or heavy construction industries is preferred
  • Specialized knowledge in the area of risk management
  • University or College Health and Safety Certification preferred
  • CRSP designation an asset
